Free cloud credits for Indian startups

Why India is a special case

The global advice on cloud credits reduces to "get an investor to introduce you." That advice is close to useless if you are bootstrapped in Bengaluru or Indore.

India has a second door. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) runs startup recognition through Startup India, and recognised startups get access to a resource-partner ecosystem that includes the major cloud providers.

What DPIIT recognition gets you on AWS

Startup India lists AWS Activate benefits for DPIIT-recognised startups: $5,000 in AWS Activate credits, alongside partner offers the portal values at up to $800,000, plus training and accelerator access.

That is five times the standard self-serve Founders entry point, without raising a rupee of equity. The listed eligibility conditions are:

• Association with Startup India DPIIT, and possession of an Organizational ID
• No prior receipt of equal or greater AWS Activate credits from another provider
• Pre-Series B or self-funded
• An operational company website
• Founded within the past ten years

Getting DPIIT recognition

Recognition is free and done online through the Startup India portal. In broad terms you need:

• Incorporation as a Private Limited Company, LLP, or Registered Partnership
• Incorporated within the last ten years
• Annual turnover under ₹100 crore in any financial year since incorporation
• Working on innovation, development or improvement of a product, process or service — or a scalable model with potential for employment or wealth creation
• Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business

Recognition is worth having independently of cloud credits — it also opens tax benefits, self-certification under labour and environment laws, and public procurement relaxations.

Google Cloud for Indian startups

Google does not run a DPIIT-specific credit line in the same way, but Indian startups apply on identical terms to everyone else:

• Start tier — up to $2,000, no institutional funding required. Fully open to Indian startups.
• Scale tier — up to $200,000 over two years, routed through a qualifying investor or accelerator.
• Google for Startups Accelerator: India — a separate, cohort-based programme. Getting in gives you the partner affiliation that unlocks higher cloud tiers, along with the mentorship.

Practical notes for Indian applicants

• Use a .in or .com domain email that matches your website. The single most common rejection reason globally applies here too — a Gmail address on the application reads as unverifiable.
• Credits are denominated in USD. Your INR billing converts at the prevailing rate, so the rupee value of a fixed credit balance moves with the exchange rate.
• GST and billing address must match your registered entity. Mismatches between the AWS account entity and the DPIIT-recognised entity cause delays.
• Talk to your incubator. Many Indian incubators and state startup missions are Activate Providers in their own right and hold an Organization ID they will share on request.
